Developing Your Search Strategy

An important part of finding the right information is knowing how to search for it. Your search strategy includes 3 parts:

  • Deciding where to search for information
  • Identifying which search terms you want to use based on the main concepts in your research question
  • Structuring your search for the best results (building on earlier searches; using AND, OR, NOT; using other tips and tricks)

What kind of search should I choose?

Worldcat Discovery (the searching system on the Moye Library website) gives you the option of choosing a basic or an advanced search. You can also choose to search within an individual database specific to your subject area. In this module we will only cover Worldcat Discovery because it is our recommended search option for beginning researchers.
