Kate Mitchell is a Senior Learning Designer at the University of Melbourne, supporting programmatic design with ePortfolios.

10.30 - 10.45Break
10.45 - 11.30H5P and the art and experience of interactive learning design
Vicki Pollard

This presentation explores how H5P can be effectively integrated to enhance teaching and learning, within the context of a unit in a Graduate Certificate of Higher Education (GCHE). The presentation begins by highlighting the importance of investing time in designing clear and purposeful learning activities that align with sound pedagogical principles. The session then illustrates how H5P has been successfully used in educational settings to promote student engagement and collaboration, drawing on current examples from students in the GCHE. Finally, it examines the research evidence surrounding H5P’s impact on learning outcomes, considering both its benefits and limitations. Overall, while H5P offers powerful interactive features, its effectiveness depends on thoughtful instructional design and intentional use.

Dr Vikki Pollard is a Senior Lecturer at Australian Catholic University, working in the Centre for Education and Innovation. Her research focuses on digital pedagogy, inclusive learning design, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.

11.30 - 12.00Using AI with H5P and other tools
Garth Lategan, Swinburne University

In this session, Garth will explore how GENai can work alongside H5P and other digital tools to design engaging, interactive, and personalised learning experiences. From using AI to generate content ideas and streamline resource creation, to enhancing interactivity with H5P activities, you’ll see practical workflows and examples that you can take back to your own teaching. Whether you’re an experienced H5P creator or just starting out, this presentation will show you how AI can be a game-changer for saving time and boosting creativity.

Garth Lategan is a Learning Technologist at Swinburne University of Technology, specialising in educational technology integration, instructional design, and AI in education.

12.30 - 13.30Lunch - Provided by venue
13.30 - 14.00Leading Learning in the Age of AI
Tony Maguire

As artificial intelligence reshapes the landscape of education, leaders face a pivotal moment to guide its ethical, effective, and human-centred integration. In this session, Tony Maguire explores four critical questions at the heart of AI’s impact on learning design:

  • How do we ensure ethical use of AI?
  • What skills must educators and designers develop to thrive?
  • Will AI displace jobs or redefine them?
  • What are the practical benefits of AI in learning design?

Through real-world examples, from adaptive learning platforms to AI-generated feedback, this presentation offers insights into how leaders can navigate the challenges and opportunities of AI with clarity, responsibility, and vision. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of how to lead confidently in an AI-augmented future.

Tony leads the D2L Australia team and has created deep and lasting local and international networks over his 25 years in the EdTech space – always with a focus on collaboration and using learning to drive business transformation.

14.00 - 14.30From Video to Practice: Building Micro-Lessons with H5P Course Presentation
Benjamin Waller

This presentation demonstrates how H5P Course Presentation can transform passive video-based language instruction into interactive practice activities that support meaningful learning. Using a Vietnamese travel lesson video as a case study, the session explores how to create segmented, self-paced micro-learning modules featuring dual-speed audio, visual scaffolding, and embedded grammar explanations and self corrective feedback. The presentation examines key design decisions including navigation philosophy, color-coded linguistic scaffolding, and why Course Presentation's linear structure effectively mirrors natural conversation flow for language learning. Drawing on practical implementation with a Vietnamese language center, the session illustrates how thoughtful use of H5P's interactive features can bridge the gap between video presentation and the essential practice phase that builds language automaticity through repetition, focused language practice and self corrective feedback.

14.30 - 15.00Creating purposeful, playful H5Ps
Michala Stenzel & Bianca Muteve

As learning designers, we often find ourselves juggling multiple priorities while striving to create content that’s both engaging and effective. H5P offers a quick and accessible way to build interactive learning experiences, but how do we ensure they’re meaningful without spending hours on development? In this session, we’ll showcase a selection of simple, fun, and pedagogically sound H5Ps that prove you don’t need a lot of time to make a big impact. We’ll share examples, practical tips, and design shortcuts.

Whether you're new to H5P or looking to refresh your toolkit, this session will help you design efficiently and with purpose while maintaining a sense of play.

Michala and Bianca are Learning Designers at ACU’s Centre for Education and Innovation. They work across disciplines to design inclusive, interactive learning experiences - combining sound pedagogy with creativity.

15.15 - 15.45Inclusive STEM Learning with H5P Tools.
Charu Rana

The presentation showcases UDL-aligned H5P examples from STEM courses, illustrating how interactive digital tools can foster more inclusive and engaging learning experiences. By delivering content in multiple formats—such as interactive videos, branching scenarios, quizzes, and more—students can engage with material in ways that align with their individual learning preferences and needs. These examples highlight how the tool supports active learning, reflection, and skill development.

Dr Charu Rana is currently working as a Team Lead, Digital Development within the Learning, Teaching, and Quality portfolio at STEM College, RMIT University. She has 15+ years of experience in the higher education sector and holds a doctorate in Engineering.
