A Fresh Look for Open Source H5P: February 2026
Hey H5P community!
We’re excited to share that H5P just got a whole lot cleaner, more accessible, and even easier on the eyes without changing how you create content.
What’s New? A Cleaner, More Engaging Experience
The biggest change you’ll see is the new look and feel. Think modern layouts, better typography, and more consistent interactions across all your H5P content types.
Some highlights:
Cleaner, more contemporary styling with simplified shapes and fewer heavy borders
Neutral default color palette designed to work with institutional branding
Improved typography and spacing for better readability, especially on mobile
More consistent layouts for titles, instructions, and activity content
Additionally, we have migrated to a new Content Type Hub - hub-api.h5p.org
This means that, in order to get the latest updates of content types, all H5P Core integrations must update the H5P Hub endpoints with the new URL. The old Hub (api.h5p.org) will not receive any new updates.
Where the new look and feel is available
Included in H5P Core version 1.28
Default theme: Daylight (fixed default in core)
Default density: Wide (fixed default in core)
Platforms built on core (plugins, tools) gain access when they update to the core version
that contains the new look and feel and choose to expose configuration
OER Hub
All content on OER Hub uses:
Theme: Daylight (fixed)
Density: Medium (fixed)
When content is imported from the Hub into an http://H5P.com account, it adopts that
organization’s theme and density settings
All these updates are designed to make content easier for learners to engage with while keeping authoring simple for instructors.
Authoring? Nothing Has Changed
Good news: if you know how to create H5P content today, you’ll know how to do it tomorrow. Authoring workflows, editors, and content behaviors are all the same. We’ve just polished the look and feel, making your content look better and behave consistently—especially across devices.
Core Libraries That Got a Tune-Up
A few behind-the-scenes updates:
H5P.Components – stabilizing shared elements
h5p-question – deep redesign with accessibility improvements
h5p-joubel-ui – refined UI utility library
These updates make content building smoother and more consistent across content types.
Popular Content Types Now Refreshed
Here are just some of the content types you’ll notice with the new look and accessibility updates:
Accordion, Audio & Audio Recorder, Fill in the Blanks, Drag and Drop / Drag the Words, Dialog Cards, Flashcards, Free Text Question, Image Hotspots, Memory Game, Multiple Choice, Interactive Video, Course Presentation, Branching Scenario, Interactive Book, Question Set, Essay…and more!
If you rely on these in Moodle or WordPress, updating your H5P libraries will bring these upgrades to your learners gradually.
Canvas Users
For those integrating H5P with Canvas, Canvas now requires a User-Agent header in all API requests. Don’t worry our integration handles this automatically, so open source users won’t need to change anything.
Tips for Open Source Admins
If you manage your own H5P installation, here’s a quick checklist:
Update H5P core and libraries to the latest versions.
Test your most-used content types in a staging environment.
Review any custom CSS for compatibility with the new design.
Some content types are being updated gradually, so don’t be surprised if you see a mix of old and new designs at first.
Why This Matters
For open source adopters, these updates are a big deal:
Learners get a more modern and consistent experience
Authoring workflows remain familiar
UI improvements reduce long-term maintenance
If you haven’t updated your H5P libraries lately, now’s the perfect time to dive in, explore the new look, and share feedback with the community.
We’re excited to see how you’ll use these updates to make your courses even more engaging and inclusive! Our Matrix community is just a click away: https://matrix.to/#/#h5p-open-source:matrix.org
