H5P Making Open Courseware More Interactive

My name is Ibrahim Ercan. I’m an English instructor in Turkey. My experience with H5P started when I came up with the idea of creating our open courseware website, which we could use as an online MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) platform to help our students learn on the go.

First, I started creating our website using Wordpress (CMS) and I needed something that I could use to engage our students with different types of interactive activities to teach English and other subjects. In the past, I was using Hot Potatoes to create online exercises in HTML web pages but I thought it wouldn’t be enough and I might have problems on mobile handsets. And also I checked other tools and software to create quizzes or other interactive exercises, which were available in the market, but the cost of creating such exercises was high and the quality of the software or tools was also questionable. Later on, I came across H5P when I was looking for a new Wordpress plugin to use on our open courseware website and I thought it was the right thing I was looking for so far. There were more types of online exercises than I could imagine and it changed the whole concept of my open courseware project. And also I started using it on my personal website to test with my students in the classroom and it worked very well. What I like most about H5P is the interactive video part where we can create exercises inside the video.

I had the opportunity to present at an ELT conference in Turkey and introduced H5P to English language teachers as the next-generation web-based tool to create interactive content and help students in their language learning process.

What’s next?

I think you are also working on the integration of H5P into learning management systems like Opigno (already done) and Moodle. It will completely revolutionize the learning experience in these LMS platforms by turning them into more interactive and engaging spaces. As we witness the boom of social networks and their uptake by teachers, we can use this energy to create a platform (like H5P Edu) for teachers to allow them to create and share their online interactive exercises with other teachers without having the necessity of creating a website with content management systems.

Can you please expand on this part a bit more?  Did you use H5P as the Wordpress plug-in, in a standalone configuration, or as part of another platform?

Well, our website works in Wordpress so I used H5P as a Wordpress plugin which is available in the Wordpress plugin repository. If you have Wordpress installed website you can easily download and install H5P right from the 'add new' plugin menu, and search for 'H5P'. After you install H5P you can embed H5P content anywhere on your website using the shortcodes. Because when you create a new page or add a new post, you will see 'Add HP5' above the text editor section of each page or post. But you also need to download H5P sample content for the first time in order to create similar content on your website. You can see 'download' icon in the left corner bottom of each activity type on H5P Examples and Downloads page.

Great to hear how you are using H5P

Merhaba Ibrahim,I've only recently discovered h5p and have been exploring the features of the tools it offers, so it's very interesting to read about your open courseware project!!
Teşekkür ederim!

Hi! I'm a freelance trainer in English here in France. My website site works in Wordpress. So, I have recently installed the H5P plugin in order to provide rich interactive online homework reminders and exercices. The thing is that I didn't get to understand how to register end users or trainees and what the end-user interface would look like. Have you found a way to assign exercices too?

Thank you for your help.

Hi Nathalie

It's good to hear that you are using H5P like we are in the UK. In answer to your question, H5P is a content tool it is not an LMS. If you need to register trainees or end users you would need to do that either by using an LMS plugin for youir WordPress, for example Learndash or Sensei or you would need to pull your H5P content from your LMS into a Moodle by embedding a link to the H5P content in a Moodle course. The Moodle option will work but you would just be pulling content from an open weblink so it doesn't protect your content. If it is only homework for pupils that shouldn't be a problem. If you look around these forums you will see that the team in Norway are working with developers to improve the Moodle functionality through plugins and and LTI link (don't worry if that doesn't mean much to you). My recommendation would be to keep it simple trainess can use your H5P activitries straight from your WP website now but if registration is important then look at an LMS plugin.

Moodle have released something called Moodle Cloud that is free and you can have upto 50 learners on it. That might be worth experimenting with if registration is important.

Best regards Richard

Just spotted at typo, apologies correction below...

"...or you would need to pull your H5P content from your LMS into a Moodle by embedding a link to the H5P content in a Moodle course. .."

shoudl read as

"or you would need to pull your H5P content into your LMS, for example into a Moodle by embedding a link to the H5P content in a Moodle course."

Like you I will also present H5P at a conference about language learning.   It is so easy to use and varied that it should get a warm reception.
