Sporadic Moodle Plug-in H5P Completion Issues

We have been experiencing an issue and trying to get Moodle support for the issue, however, we are advised that the issue is on H5Ps end.

We have participants that are not able to advance to the next activity (Moodle or H5P - doesn't seem to matter) despite completing the H5P according to the access restriction settings.  

Here is an example (note that this is sporadic):

  • H5P (built within Moodle) Course Presentation with questions requiring a 3/4 to pass.  Participants complete it correctly and chooses correct answers. Even though they earned a 3/4 or a 4/4, they cannot move on to the next activity, which is a Moodle activity.  The restriction on the next activity is that it is not available until the H5P is completed correctly.

This started happening fairly regularly around Nov. 7.  To date, we have had to manually advance 21 participants.  They are completing the H5P according to the requirements, and it isn't isolated to a specific course or type of H5P.  We've had it happen in Course Presentations, Fill-in-the-Blanks, and Interactive Video.  These are all courses that were previously working fine and the settings on the content haven't been changed.

We would appreciate any advice anyone can provide us, as we do not want our participants to be "stuck."

To help you isolate the issue would you mind providing some additional information:

  1. Moodle version
  2. H5P version
  3. Browser and version
  4. I saw your this comment, how different is this with your issue.

Since you mentioned that this started happening around Nov. 7:

  1. Any recent changes to the environment (new plugins/modules, updates, configuration changes etc.)
  2. Any recent changes to the browser you're using (new extensions, updates etc.)

  1. Moodle version - We were on 3.6 and we noted that this started happening after an October patch update.
  2. H5P version - 2019111300
  3. Browser and version - Multiple. We have latest Chrome version within our office that we all primarily use.  Our external participants have noted the issue with Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and Edge - versions unknown as we don't ask that question when people submit troubleshooting tickets.
  4. I saw your this comment, how different is this with your issue. - We thought these were the same issue, however, ours is not related to unlocking activity completion.  It is about participants not being able to complete activities, submission screens not reflecting accurate scoring, etc.  

The only changes we are aware of is the patch update made by Moodle, however, they are stating that the issue is on H5Ps end and are offering the following solutions despite us not having this issue before Nov. 7th.

Our site is supported by Blackboard, so we look to them for troubleshooting support.

Hi, we have experienced similar issues with activity completion and students getting stuck when using the Interactive Video H5P activity on moodle. 

We use iomad on moodle version 4.1 on our elearning platform. We initially had this same issue a few years ago (2019/2020) with moodle 3.8 when we first tested it, but decided to change completion settings on our H5P activities to complete on viewing, as many users were initially having a lot of problems.

Users were complaining that they were completing the interaction within the video, but not seeing a submit screen. When clicking on the star icon at the end of the video, they just saw that no completion had been submitted, but there was no option to submit. This was not happening to all users however, the majority were getting through the course without issue. 

We were able to recreate this issue last year, by navigating out of the chapter after completing the interaction and before submission, and then going back into the chapter. But when we tried this again after updating the H5P plugin in around March of this year, we could not see any issue. 

And so, thinking that the issue had been fixed by an H5P upgrade, in March 2023 we updated one of existing course's activity completion settings to require a grade before completion could be marked on that chapter, and released this to our clients. Users have continued to have issues with this course after this update and are getting "stuck" in their courses, unable to complete every chapter. And we are also now unable to recreate this issue.   

We would ideally want every user to have to complete the interaction and submit their response in every chapter in order to mark it complete, but are unable to do this, as users keep getting stuck when this setting is switched on.   

This has happened to users in multiple browsers (chrome, firefox, edge, internet explorer etc..).
