Scoring in Branching Scenario

Kcarter's picture

Hello, Would anyone have experience with setting up the scoring in branching scenarios? We have currently created game simulations with the score calculation in the branching (blue) portion of the branching scenario and the final score does not make sense. I tried placing the scoring at the question level and it did not calculate at all. Do you have any video tutorials specific to scoring or would there be someone I could talk to and show, to see if they can pinpoint where I have inputted incorrectly? Thanks in advance.

HI Kcarter,

This documentation may help. It is an "unofficial" draft but I think it might help. You can also share your content and include a brief description on how you would like it scored so that we can check.

Thank you for the documentation and your help. I am really trying to understand this. Once I do, I am happy to share back a how-to video since I know nothing about coding. Once the games are published in March they will be openly licensed CC-BY-NC-SA too.

Here is what I tried based on the documentation:
Static Scoring -
This does give a consistent final score but it is always perfect 7/7, even when the answers are incorrect
If I try to make a customer end scenario at the end of each branch it wants to delete the next branch

Dynamic does not include scores from content does that same as above you get the questions perfect no matter the answer (makes sense since it doesn't include scores from content. (Not sure its purpose)

Dynamic with the check box checked to include user scores from interactions within the branching scenario
Perfect answer with the highest points score 10/10 I have no idea how it is calculating 10. All blue branching blocks and bubbles have no values. The values are only at the content type blocks.
I purposely answered incorrectly and still received a perfect score of 10/10.
If I were to look at what the content type actually scores it should have been out of 3 with a potential alternative 2 point question adding up to 5

Hi, I think something happened to my reply from yesterday so I am going to try again. I apologize if you are getting this multiple times.

Hi Kcarter,

I apologize I thought I approved your comment yesterday (obviously not). Anyway for starters static will not work for you the reason for this that your branching scenario only have a single end scenario.

Before I dig deeper into the content and provide a suggestion/s I would like to understand how you would like to score it. From what I have seen so far a branching question may provide a score or not. Those that have no scores are "loops" since it's usually just asking if you want to rewatch a video. We can use Scene 2 as an example Answer 3 is the rewatch the video. Now for the other 2 answers the 1st is scored as 3 points and the 2nd is scored as 2 points. In the current setup if dynamic is chosen and scores from the contents are not included choosing the 2nd answer will always have a higher score since after answering it will jump to the 1st branch answer which also has a score. If the student directly goes to the 1st answer they will only get the 3 points. Is this what you intend to do or if they chose the 2nd answer they only get credited for 2 points? Admittedly Branching Scenario's scoring is a bit complicated and needs a bit of planning and a lot of trial and errors.

Hello,

Thank you, I thought so too but I am glad we are connecting now. Yes we have adjusted re-watch the video to not have points as someone who was helping me noticed that when people watched the video and went back to answer a question, they could in fact earn more points then someone who went to the question.

In terms of the option to answer a question for 3 points or answer a different question for 2 points, it would be an either/or.

To answer this question above: If the student directly goes to the 1st answer they will only get the 3 points. Is this what you intend to do or if they chose the 2nd answer they only get credited for 2 points? Yes, that is correct, one or the other not both.

I wonder if we understood scoring better we would have set the question ups differently.

It may be for this first edition, I will have to leave it that students earn perfect even if they answer a question incorrectly. That would be what I would like to solve. How can your final score be what you earned correctly not always perfect?

Thank you,
Kim

Hi Kim,

Now I understand this better and you are correct there are some revisions that you need to make it work. I will again use the same branching questions as an example. For the students to get only 2 points you need to recreate (copy/paste) the 1st branch and place it after the Course Presentation in the 2nd answer then make sure that the score for the "duplicate" is set to 0. This way if students chooses the 2nd answer they only get 2 points instead of 2 and then plus the 3 from the 1st answer.

In this scenario you will not always get a perfect score. I have updated your content to demonstrate what I am saying. You can access the content here. Please try it out, take note that I only made changes to the 2nd branching question and choosing the 2nd option will give 12 out 13.
