Hello from Hamburg!

At H5P, we hosted our first community event of the year!

We brought together educators, developers, and learning designers for talks, demos, and discussions. Sessions highlighted practical uses of H5P, such as interactive storytelling, digital escape rooms, video transcripts, and ways to connect H5P activities with xAPI.

Our key takeaways

Throughout the day, participants shared practical examples of how H5P is being used to create engaging learning experiences. Check out our key learnings from each session below.

Innovations in interactive learning

In “H5P Innovations in Action,” Jakob Kopczynski showcased ways to create richer learning experiences using H5P, including interactive storytelling, animation, and adding transcripts to video-based learning. The session demonstrated how these features can make learning more engaging while improving accessibility for learners.

Unlocking learning analytics with xAPI

Long-time contributor Oliver Tacke explored the relationship between H5P and xAPI, describing it as an “untapped treasure.” His session highlighted how tracking learner interactions can help educators understand how content is used and improve learning design over time. A key learning here is that better analytics can transform H5P activities from static content into valuable learning insights.

Faster content creation with AI

In a session on AI and H5P, our very own Nils Viken explored how artificial intelligence can help educators generate interactive learning activities more quickly. The focus was on reducing production time while maintaining high-quality, engaging learning experiences. We spent this session on how AI tools are beginning to support educators in scaling interactive learning without sacrificing creativity.

Game-based learning with digital escape rooms

Ceren Calici demonstrated how to design digital escape rooms using branching scenarios, interactive video, and course presentations. The session showed how narrative and gamification can help students solve problems, collaborate, and progress through structured learning paths.

Sharing open educational resources

Patrick Oberdörfer introduced ZUM-Apps, a major hub for sharing H5P-based open educational resources. The platform allows educators to access, create, and share interactive learning materials across the German-speaking education community.

Later, Peter Leth discussed why open content matters, explaining how Creative Commons licensing and open resources can support collaborative teaching and learning.

Designing effective microlearning

Katharina Frosch explored how to design microlearning experiences using H5P Interactive Video as a structural framework. Her approach combines guided learning paths with branching scenarios that allow learners to experiment, reflect, and return to the main learning path. Our key takeaway here is that even short learning experiences benefit from thoughtful instructional design and structured interaction.

A community-driven future

The Hamburg meetup highlighted the diversity of the H5P community and the many ways interactive content is being used, from classrooms and universities to professional training environments.

Most importantly, the event reinforced what makes H5P unique: a community of educators, developers, and designers learning from one another. You can get a copy of all slides in our free community, and talk to speakers too. Join the discussion today on Matrix!

With such a great event, we are excited to announce we'll be hosting two more upcoming events in Australia. Check them out below:
