Meet the new H5P Community Maintainers
Meet the new H5P Community Maintainers
H5P has always been shaped by the people who use it, contribute to it and help make it better. As we continue to strengthen our open-source work, we’re delighted to welcome a new group of H5P Community Maintainers.
Jack Franks, Luca Bösch, Oliver Tacke, Oscar Arzola and Bienvenido Villadelrey bring a wealth of experience across open-source software, learning technology, and community support. They will work alongside the H5P team and the wider community to help us make progress visible, encourage collaboration and focus attention on the work that matters most.
Working together on the H5P GitHub board
Our new H5P GitHub project board gives the community a clearer view of open-source work: what needs attention, what has been reviewed, which items have been prioritised and how work is progressing.
The Community Maintainers will help bring knowledge and practical experience into that process. Their work will include:
helping triage issues and feature requests
reviewing and validating pull requests and proposed changes
sharing feedback from real-world use
contributing to documentation and community guidance
helping identify priorities and areas that need attention
supporting constructive conversations between contributors, the community and the H5P team
The board is intended to make collaboration easier for everyone. Whether you are an educator reporting an issue, a developer working on an integration, or someone else, your feedback can help move the project forward.
Meet the new maintainers
Jack Franks
Jonathan “Jack” Franks has been building software for most of his life. After starting as a Microsoft-stack developer, he moved into open-source development in the mid-2000s through Ruby on Rails before finding the Drupal community.
Jack maintains several modules on Drupal.org and has built and customised learning management systems in Drupal using H5P activities since 2018. He is a principal software engineer at Breakthrough Technologies, a Chicago-based company that builds human-centred software for mission-driven organisations.
Jack’s experience across Drupal, learning platforms and open-source development will be particularly valuable as we continue improving the tools and integrations that help people use H5P in practice.
Luca Bösch
Luca Bösch is Product Owner for Digital Tools at the Bern University of Applied Sciences in Switzerland. His work brings together educational technology, product ownership, software development and DevOps—and although his role is strategic, he remains a hands-on developer.
Luca began contributing to the Moodle ecosystem around 2012 and has continued to contribute across a range of areas for more than a decade. He is passionate about automated testing, test-driven development and software quality, and is looking forward to helping improve the Moodle–H5P integration.
His combination of product perspective, development experience and deep knowledge of Moodle will help connect community needs with practical improvements to the H5P ecosystem.
Oliver Tacke
Oliver Tacke is one of the long-time contributors to the H5P community. He first encountered H5P in 2016 and later spent time as part of the H5P core team in Tromsø.
Since then, Oliver has contributed code and features to H5P, developed content types and additional plugins, supported the community forums and helped create other tools for the ecosystem. He was also one of the first H5P Ambassadors.
Oliver’s long-term knowledge of H5P’s code, content types and community makes him a valuable guide for contributors and a strong link between the project’s history and its future.
Oscar Arzola
Oscar Arzola brings more than 20 years of experience building for the web and mobile. He is a Product Owner at Pressbooks, where he helps guide the roadmap, and also works as a Release Manager to help ship open-source publishing tools for educational content.
His technical background includes PHP, Laravel, WordPress, TypeScript, JavaScript, Kotlin and Swift. Oscar is also passionate about open-source publishing, accessibility and creating reliable ways for teams to deliver high-quality work.
That combination of product leadership, technical experience and release management will support the community as ideas move from discussion and contribution towards tested, usable improvements.
Bienvenido Villadelrey
Bienvenido Villadelrey, also known as BV, brings extensive community support experience. Bienvenido has been part of the H5P core team for almost a decade. He mainly handles forum moderation and support. He helped launch H5P.com and was the first to handle its technical/customer support.
A native of the Philippines, he has worked in customer service for more than two decades, with experience in ISP, networking, and software technical support.
Building a stronger open-source community
Community maintainership is about making it easier for people to participate. It is about sharing knowledge, creating clearer paths for contributions and making sure the people who use H5P have a meaningful voice in how it develops.
The GitHub board is one part of that work. We hope it will help the community understand what is happening, contribute where they can and follow progress over time. You can get involved today by telling us what's important on our Matrix community.
Please join us in welcoming our new maintainers! We’re excited to work with them and the wider community as we continue building a more open, collaborative and sustainable future for H5P.
