Variables in the branching scenario

Hi

The use of variables in the branching scenario would be great to make use of a point system. This would also allow for a final resume of decisions.

Thanks,

José Oliveira

Hi José,

Would you mind elaborating your request. In order for your feature request to attract as much interest as possible make sure it follows the below guidelines:

  1. It is clear from every perspective how the feature will work. We recommend describing the feature with one or more user stories, for instance “As an author, I want it to be possible to pick between different effects for the check answer animation so that the learner will see a variety of effects and also I can adapt the effects to my target audience(I’ll be using pink unicorns which works really well for both my target audience which are 4 year old girls and venture capitalists)”

  2. If the feature can be illustrated with images or videos it always helps

Hi BV,

thanks for your answer!

Yes i will try to elaborate this. The branching scenario is, in my opinion one of the most powerfull tools in education and learning.

With variables this could be even more powerfull.

Imagine a decision point with three options, where we can add points to the variable "points" according to the decision. This could be done in any of the decision points. In the end, or when needed, the variable could be shown.

A path with the best decision would lead to the best pontuation.

More complex, but even better: It would also be great to have more than a variable. Examples in a scenario game: Points, collected itens, food, energy. This means that we would have algo a previous analysis in a desired point to evaluate variables. Example: If energy is zero than it would lead to an ending display. ... a More gamified learning possibilities

Another type of example:

The RACE Scale. With this feature we could create branching scenario like this: https://www.rccc.eu/race/ For any option taken points will be added and in the end they will be visible.

This type of scales often used in education can be done with branching scenario, but in the future maybe a h5p could be done just for scales. Another example: http://www.educationplanner.org/students/self-assessments/learning-style...

I can contribute with any, validations, trials or localizations in Portuguese for this...

Hi José,

Thank for the well written explanation.Would you mind checking this simple content, and correct me if I'm wrong that this provides the "variable "points" according to the decision".

Hi BV,

yes it does.

Hi José,

Since this is the case please follow the steps below to create a "variable" type Branching Scenario:

  1. Go to Settings and under scoring choose "Dynamically Calculate..."
  2. Create a branching question and include all possible choices.
  3. If needed create another branching question below or add another activity.
  4. Reopen the branching question that you previously created
  5. Under the alternatives expand the branching options then expand feedback at the bottom there is a place where you add the score.

Note: If the score option is not available this means that there are no activities or branching questions below the alternative. You will notice in my sample content there is a "placeholder text" this is so that the last question will have points allotted for the answers.

Feel free to download my content so that you can exactly how I created it. I hope this helps and if you have any clarifications feel free to post your comments.

Hi BV,

Thanks,

This solution works when we only need one variable, however we must construct all the branching three. Happily, there’s a paste button that speeds this process.

In this simple example it led to 27 ends, but in the race scale i referred this could go to 2 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 2 x 3 = 324 endings.

Hi José,

I'm afraid that may take some additions to the code, and I sure hope that someone from the community takes interest in creating it.
