Essay: Questions can be re-answered after reload

Hi folks,

I'm using H5P with Moodle. I'd like to use the essay content type but have come across a weird behaviour.

I have decided that learners cannot repeat an essay after they have clicked the submit button. It works fine so far as the repeat button is not displayed. Hence, the student cannot enter another answer. But: Whenever the site is reloaded (may it be by hitting the F5 button or by going forth and back), the input field is empty and can be filled again.

This behaviour results in two issues:

  1. If a student enters a new text and hits the submit button again, the evaluation will be changed to whatever the new entry corresponds.
  2. I'd like to talk with the students in class about their findings. But if they cannot see their answers in the essay tasks, they would have to write down their answers in another document, too.

Unfortunately, as a user, I was not able to check the version of Moodle and H5P, the unversity is using. If you need this information: Is there any way to find this out or do I need to ask the Moodle admin?

Regards,

Eishle

Hi Eishle!

This is not an issue with Essay (it in fact works "better" in restoring the state then most other content types), but with the configuration of the H5P integration - in your case either the H5P plugin for moodle or moodle's custom H5P integration.

H5P allows to store the current state that the content is in and to retrieve it later on when the content is reloaded. In order to do that, this "save content state" feature must be activated by an admin.

If your moodle site us using the H5P plugin (using a black H5P symbol), then this option can be found in the H5P plugin settings.

If your moodle site is relying on moodle's custom H5P integration (using a blue H5P symbol and the content bank), then you are out of luck, because moodle did not implement the "save content state" feature.

Best,

Oliver

Hi Oliver,

Thanks for your quick reply. I'm going to check with the Moodle admin.

The Moodle admin enabled the function. Now I can see text which was entered earlier.

Since you are using Moodle, why don't you use either the Quiz or the Lesson activities, in which you can have one (or more) essays?

Because the H5P essay has a nice feature where you can match the text against a set of words and expressions including any variation you define for such a word or expression. The automatic feedback, then, depends on the tags the students typed in. I'd like to see how it works in practice with approx. 50 students.

Have you tried the Moodle Essay (auto-grade) question type?
