H5P voice recorder

Hello

Can the H5P voice recorder (https://h5p.org/audio-recorder) be used in a moodle assignment? Or if not, can it be incorporated in a moodle page and require students to upload their file to the moodle site? Basically, I am looking for the functionality of the PooDLL module but in HTML5. This is part of a research project.

Thank you for any help.

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

You will not be able to embed the Audio Recorder in the Assignment, so you would have to link to it. And users have to upload the sound file they create.

Be aware that Audio Recorder is only supported by Edge, Chrome and FireFox.

Hello Tom

Thanks for the reply. I am not quite sure I fully understand and I also have a new question.

So... Is it possible to download and embed the audio recorder in a normal html page (i.e. NOT in moodle etc)? If so, where do I find the code. I went to github but I find it a bit confusing - are there instructions somewhere? The Readme file is not very useful unless the only place it works is on a server.

Thanks again for your help and great great initiative!

Hi Andrew,

H5P content (e.g the Audio Recorder) has to live within a system with a H5P plugin (e.g. Moodle/Drupal/WordPress). But on some of these systems (not Moodle) there is a Embed button below the H5P.

So, you can host your H5P content in Moodle, but you can't embed it into other non-H5P content. If you are hosting your H5P-content on some other system (e.g Drupal), you can use the embed button to get some markup with an iframe to embed that content on another webpage (can even be a static webpage).

Regarding Audio Recorder, I only meant that the learners have to download the audio file themselves, and get it to the teacher manually (it's not automatically uploaded to the server).

I hope this helps to clairify things.

Thank you Toma. So, in short, I cannot embed it in just any system of my choice or in any page of my choice. It always has to be done through the intermediary of an H5p plug-in. Or, to put it another way, it is not a stand-alone system in any sense, and H5p is also not stand-alone and can only be implemented within moodle, WordPress, Drupal  etc.

Did I get it right this time? Thanks very much. Andrew

Yes, it is correct.

(With the only caveat you can use an iframe, to embed your h5p content in another site, then your host site)

- Tom

Yes - i was thinking of an iframe - thank you - Andrew

Hi, I really like the voice recorder and I'm hoping that I'll be able to get this to work. At the moment when the user clicks "download", a message is displayed asking the user where to save that file (the "downloads" folder on many computers). Is it possible to get a button such as "download to dropbin" so that after the student has recorded their voice and clicks "download", the .wav file gets saved directly into a specific Moodle dropbin?

Hi, this is not yet possible and it probably requires some work to get it working.

If you'd like to see this feature in H5P I suggest that you create a well-formed feature request so that it may be picked up by others.

Good morning, icc

Do you think that it will be possible in the near future.

I have noticed the post is from 2017. Is there any new development?

Many thaks

Hi Joseca,

I'm sorry there are no developments on this feature. The good news is we’re now working on something called the H5P supporter program allowing the H5P community to vote for and fund the top voted H5P features. Also there are developers in the community who every now and then works on a feature they find interesting or useful.

Note: I moved this post to the Feature Request forum.

Hi BV52,

I'd like to also upvote the 'upload to server' feature - such a critical feature for anyone wanting students to submit their recordings.

Also, I note that currently the audio recorder is supposed to work on Chrome, Edge and Firefox browsers. However, I'm having no luck downloading the recordings when using a mobile, having tried Safari and Chrome. With Safari, it records and playsback successfully, but displays a new empty page titled 'blob:' when trying to download. With Chrome, the whole thing doesn't work and it just displays the 'Microphone not support' error message configured within the audio recorder.

Can you confirm whether the audio recorder should currently work on any mobile browser? If not, can we add this to the feature request list?

Thanks so much.

Hi MoZhewen,

I've just confirmed that it works using Chrome in android. I assume that you are using an iOS device. With this in mind the other browsers that you can install still uses Safari's core files and this may be the cause of the issue.

Hi, Do you know the Atto RTC recorder? It's similar to the Poodll recorder but the sound isn't as good imo and not sure if it works in assignements, etc.

https://moodle.org/plugins/atto_recordrtc

This is a crucial feature, please add my vote!  I have also tried using Atto RTC recorder on Moodle and I agree the sound is not as good and it can't be used in all contexts.

HI there,

I don't see this mentioned elsewhere so I thought I'd point out a typo on the Audio Recorder's "Retry recording?" dialog.

When the user clicks "Retry" the dialog says, "By pressing "Retry" you will loose..."

"Loose" should be "Lose".

Hope this helps in some small way. :-)

Hi GrantSWilson,

I would admit I never noticed this when using the recorder. Anyway thank you pointing this out, I made the changes and have a pull request. The core team just needs to review, merge and publish the changes :-)

Hello

Using this plugin is it possible to record from the microphone and speakers of the computer at the same time?. I would like to use it to record video calls.

Hi Santiagod,

I'm afraid this is not possible with the current features of the content.

Hi there,

I wonder if there is a way to listen to the audio files recorded via Audio Recorder in Moodle LMS at a later time? Instructors would like to access the recorded files of students to grade them. Right now the problem is that when instructor clicks on the Audio Recorder assignment of the student  who recorded his/her audio it says "This user hasn't submitted an answer to the H5P yet".

Thanks.

Hi Sabina,

The Audio recorder does not have a feature to save the recording. It will only let you play or download it. I would suggest that you post a separate feature request for this. In order for your feature request to attract as much interest as possible make sure it follows the below guidelines:

  1. It is clear from every perspective how the feature will work. We recommend describing the feature with one or more user stories, for instance “As an author I want it to be possible to pick between different effects for the check answer animation so that the learners will see a variety of effects and also I can adapt the effects to my target audience(I’ll be using pink unicorns which works really well for both my target audience which are 4 year old girls and venture capitalists)”

  2. If the feature can be illustrated with images or videos it always helps

  3. Make it clear what content types this is relevant for, and or if this is a new content type

Make sure you post the feature in the Feature Request forum.

Hi BV52,

Thank you very much for your reply! I will definitely submit my recommendation in the Feture Request Forum.

Best,

Sabina

I am a language teacher (Dutch as a second language) and I am desperately looking for an 'repeat after me' function where a student can hear my speach, repeat it directly and then hear me again. If the student can record himself en compare his/her speach to the original, students can work independently on their pronounciation. Is such a feature in the works, or is there someone who could develope something like this. It's like a dictation, only with speach as an answer option instead of writing.

Hi taalmoetjedoen,

This is not possible with the current contents. Although this is possible if you host your own site by placing Audio and Audio Recorder on the same page. Furthermore you can post a feature request.

There is a paid product called Poodll. I love personally love it and like the creator's long Moodle journey. www.poodll.com

Hello,

I also support this feature request. Besides the purpose described above the accessibility of audio recordings would open even more possibilities: e.g. access to audio recordings would allow automatic interviews. This could be used to evaluate implemented H5P-content or to investigate conceptions of learner at the same stage as the H5P-content.

Sure, for these purposes a written text-based answer could be given (e.g. with the essay-content type) and accessed (e.g. using the H5PxAPIkatchu-plugin), but especially for younger children and in informal educational situations recording an audio-file is a smaller effort and barrier for the user than writing a text, so richer answers could be expected.

Therefore, accessing audio files recorded by the learners (here: H5P-users) would be an effective support for teachers, developers of H5P-content and educational researchers.

I hope that this issue finds support and that the H5P-community could develop such an application!

As I´m new in this forum, I could not find the way to vote for the feature request and I was confused by reading the comments that this issue should be placed as feature request. Isn´t this the feature request forum? Could somebody give me a hint how to vote for the issue or how to raise it as a feature request, if this doesn´t count as such?

Bests,

Jan

Hi Jan,

Thank you for your input. As for voting there is a button just below of the orginal post where you can like a feature request. This is what the H5P core team looks at as well as inputs from the community on a specific feature request thread.

... thank you! I got it.
