New content types, new WordPress plugin

otacke's picture

I just wanted to drop some news that I have put out elsewhere already during the last couple of days.

If you are wondering when the content type H5P Essay will be officially released: Could be every day now ;-) Have a peek at how it will look at https://youtu.be/q5H61oB3j-0

For those who want to store the detailed results of content types in WordPress (and by detailed results I mean xAPI statements), you might be interested in H5PxAPIkatchu that I released between the Holidays and New Year's Eve. Read more about it at https://www.olivertacke.de/labs/2017/12/27/gotta-catch-em-all/ or watch a very short video demo at https://youtu.be/DAcJtKS0NiA

Last but not least, I have built a fully working prototype of a new content type that I named H5P Dictation. It's intended for listening comprehension exercises, and Simon Thompson already came up with the idea to use it for morse code training. Download the test version at https://www.olivertacke.de/labs/2018/01/07/not-done-yet-but-what-do-you-... or/and watch the demo video ath https://youtu.be/gJyzZ-5F7SI

Love all of these! Great job :)

Thanks!

Hi! I really like the dictation tool. As a language teacher I hope it'll go public soon (and our admin will add it to our Moodle). Should be very useful for listening and spelling exercises in language classes.

Herzlichen Dank und viele Grüße!

Hi Annette!

I unfortunately cannot make any promises. It's a spare time project, and it will also have to be beta tested first. However, I also like it when a content type is published officially :-) Let's say: definitely in 2018, very very likely until the end of the 2nd quarter of 2018, maybe until the end of the 1st quarter of 2018 ;-)

I'm really looking forward to the dictation content type. :)

I have a small suggestion. Would it be possible to have the option to add a picture/image. It would be for younger students (elementary) really usefull to have both sound and visual help. Also it gives more ideas of how using it in more ways.

I made a small mock-up of how i see it.  :)

Hi mitch!

I don't see any reason why Dictation should not be included in H5P.Column. Then you could combine a dictation exercise with an image or a video or other content types that might be useful. This approach would keep the dictation content type itself a little slimmer.

Hi Oracke,

The reason why i would prefer it the other way is that i think it would be better to present it as a one after one a listening exercise.

For example, i would use it to make spelling exercises. A student gets to hear the word, slug. He types it in and then he gets or click to get the next word or sentence.
With the column option younger students will easily scroll through the whole column and get distracted. It is what have expereienced in the classroom with similair programs.

I hope you understand a little bit of what i try to say. Pardon my English.

greetings, Mitchz (logged in on a friends account, mine acted strange)

otacke's picture

Hey Mitchz!

Your English is perfectly fine. Thanks for the clarification. I am sorry, I didn't get that you were not only thinking about putting an image above, but also about an integration into H5P Question Set (and judging from the image, possibly even some layout options).

I'll see what I can do -- it is also hard for me to find the right balance between feature variety and usability.

Hello Otacke,

What you just described is exactly what i mean. I understand that it takes time and that it takes place in youre free time. :)
Luckily there are still plenty of other content types for me to discover.

Loving the H5PxAPIkatchu plugin so far. :)

About the dictation content type. Will it be possible to have the option of autoplay the sound? Just like the example what one of the responders shows is what i need, but with autoplay of the audio. It would be useful for younger users.

otacke's picture

Hi Christian!

I am glad that you like the WordPress plugin. I have not implemented an autoplay option yet, but that would not be a big deal. Do you mind to elaborate a little more about why it would be useful? I'd rather assume that it would be a little surprising if the sound played right away, in particular since it is a listening excercise and you'd probably want to "prepare" yourself for listening.

For my younger students (age 7-8) i have found out that it is easier to have the audio start right away. I tested youre dictation with them. They all asked me what to click. They are used to have it auto played with other software from schoolpublishers. Also i looked at the image of ''mitchz'' something similair is what i have in mind with the option of autoplay. :)

I must say that my students already use the dication type alot. So i think it can become a very important one. :) I even think adding the option of a text to make a question above the blank fill would be great.

Hi Christian!

Your practical experience beats my intuition. That's why feedback from the community is so valuable. Thanks a lot! I will include both, the autoplay option and an option for a text field.

otacke's picture

Hi Christian!

I just added the autoplay feature. You can now optionally define the number of seconds after that the first sample will start to play.

There are still some thing to do before Dictation will be ready for release, but nothing major.

Best,
Oliver

Hello Oliver,

That's really great to hear! I'am looking forward to it. Small question will it be able to be used in question set?

Greetings,

Christian

I don't think there's a reason why it should not.

H5P Dictation is really useful for listening and writing exercises . Great work !!!

I have saw the video and reallized the slow speed audio is not created from the normal speed audio . They are two audios files.

Is it possible implement that function ?

If it can do, maybe need change speed options: -10x to 10x.

otacke's picture

Hi kangland!

That's definitely an option for a later release, yes. I'll have to make sure that the sample is still intelligible since changing the speed also affects the pitch of the sample. You will encounter that phenomenon when changing the playback rate of an interactive video, too.

Hi there,

I was wondering what the status is of the dictation content type? It's holliday season now and i would love to create new content with this content type. :D

Greetings,

Chrisitan L.

Hi Christian!

Until now, nobody has found the time for a code review -- which I can't do myself, of course :-) However, it was put into one of the upcoming sprints, so it should be done soon. You can follow the progress in the related ticket.

Cheers,
Oliver

Hello

Love the new dication tool. Could I make a request for 2 additional options?

1 alternative responses eg There are 7 words in this sentence / there are seven words in this sentence

2 ignore captalisation

I hope this is possible!

Thanks again for developing an excellent learning tool

otacke's picture

Hi nyree!

1) is already implemented and will be part of the next update.

2) Could you please check https://h5p.org/New-Dictation-Content-Type-ignore-punctuation and discuss the suggestion there? Maybe you have the same thing in mind, maybe something different.

Best,

Oliver

Hi there,

Really like using this content in my language website. My users gave me feedback that they would like to have more diversity in the questions types. So is there a way to add dication type to question set? And a audio excercise with multiple choice would also be very nice!

Overall i really like dictation!

Keep up the good work!

Jurre

otacke's picture

Hi Jurre!

It should actually be just one line of code to add (the latest, not yet released version of) Dictation to Question Set.

You could ask the H5P core team to add it, and if enough people join your request, it might happen.

You could also use the alter semantics hook to add Dictation to the list of libraries in QuestionSet on your system. However, the downside of this approach is that others can't reuse your quiz content unless they made the same changes to their system.

Best,
Oliver

I am using dictation on my language learning site - it's great thank you. As an upgrade, could it be possible to have a few words visible, so that the words to be written ate between asterisks, as happens with gap fills? So in the sentence

Would *that be possible* please?

the words to be written in dictation are

that be possible.

Or alternatively could we have the function to attach audio files to gap fills in the Fill In the Blanks content type?

otacke's picture

Hi Jane!

Anthing is possible given enough time or money :-) There's already an issue for this feature request: https://github.com/otacke/h5p-dictation/issues/2 but for all the words in total.

I think, if you want to have some words showing, your suggestion to enhance the functionality of "Fill in the Blanks" is the better approach.

Best,

Oliver

Hi Jane,

I agree with Oliver and I suggest that you post your suggestion in the feature request forum. In order for your feature request to attract as much interest as possible make sure it follows the below guidelines:

  1. It is clear from every perspective how the feature will work. We recommend describing the feature with one or more user stories, for instance “As an author I want it to be possible to pick between different effects for the check answer animation so that the learner will see a variety of effects and also I can adapt the effects to my target audience(I’ll be using pink unicorns which works really well for both my target audience which are 4 year old girls and venture capitalists)”

  2. If the feature can be illustrated with images or videos it always helps

  3. Make it clear what content types this is relevant for, and or if this is a new content type

Make sure you post the feature in the Feature Request forum.
