Creating a Training Platform

Hi,

I'm very new to this plugin, but I was looking into methods for creating a training application for my company. We would like to create an app to put on our website to help new translators learn and master principles of patent translation specifically for various languages. (Not learn a language, but learn specifically patent translation principles.) Using a database to supply specific examples and tests (probably an SQL database), we would like to link it up to the application. I found this site, and the types of interactive content seem very simple and appropriate for what we would like to do.

My understanding is that this is only a plugin that must be used in conjuction with a hosting platform such as Moodle. I have looked into possibly using Moodle then as it is an LMS that would be helpful in keeping track of our users' progress, results, and data so that we could know how to improve the platform. My question is, are my assertions correct? Where should we begin? What platform should we use in conjuction with H5P? I am CS student with only a very little experience in web development and no major projects, so my understanding is sitll limited.

Any help would be appreciated to help us know what tools would be best based on the above-described design we would like to make.

Hi TayoEXE,

You are correct in stating that you need to install one of the 3 supported platforms. In terms of which to use it depends on your preference, Moodle does have the advantage of having a built in Gradebook but Wordpress and Drupal can be used in conjunction with an LRS you can read more about that here:

https://h5p.org/documentation/x-api

https://h5p.org/documentation/for-authors/analyzing-results-and-answers

You can also look at the main page for documenation on installation, tutorials etc.

Thanks for the reply. I guess at the moment since I am not familiar with any of them, except a little of Wordpress, I don't have any major preference at the moment, but ideally, I would like to be able to host our app on our website directly if possible. One thing that my supervisor would like is more security to help protect our intellectual property if that can be done, so I'm not sure which one would be best for all of this. I'm leaning toward Moodle since it seems to have the user result tracking built-in. (I'm sorry, I have never used anything like an xAPI or an LRS, so I am unsure about whether it's right for us or not.) Anymore information to help me find a preference would be appreciated. Thanks again!

Hi TayoEXE,

In my limited usage of the 3 I would agree that in your situation Moodle would be the wise choice. It is an LMS unlike the other 2 which is something more of a CMS. Having said this Moodle seems to me has stricter built in security and scoring as you already know is built in. In Moodle by default a user needs to "enroll" to a specific course before they can access the content and you need to specifically change the settings to let guest users to access them.

I hope this helps and if you have further questions feel free to post it here.

Thank you for the advice. I think I understand more about what I need to do as I've got Moodle running on a local server. I tried following the guide for adding H5P as a plugin for use on my Moodle site, but it seems when I found the plugin, it didn't have the "install" button that it showed on the guide, so I couldn't install it directly. It seems I can still download it as a zip file, so maybe I can install in manually that way? I looked at my version of Moodle, and it was the most up to date version (3.8dev), and I believe on Moodle's website, H5P is only compatible up to 3.7. Is that the reason I couldn't install it directly? Would I have to go to version 3.7 instead to make sure that H5P would work? Thanks for answering my questions!

Hi TayoEXE,

I would suggest that you use V3.7 since that is the latest version that H5P has been tested in. Also if I'm not mistaken V3.8 is still in active development.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick responses. I think I misread something, so I think I got 3.7+, which is basically still 3.7. I couldn't find the install button, so I tried manual installation with the zip file, and it works so far, so that seems to have fixed the problem. I'll keep you posted if I have other questions, but thanks so much!

Hi Austin,

That's good to know and you're welcome.

Hi again,

We are looking at options concerning utilizing databases with Moodle and H5P. I believe Moodle supports MySQL, etc., but my question is, can you use a DB with H5P modules? For example, can I randomize questions and answers to those questions in a module by randomly selecting one of several choices in a DB? We currently use FileMaker, which I don't think is compatible with Moodle.

I have been working on a Moodle website with H5P activities, and it seems that once an activity is completed, it can't be retaken or reviewed. Is there no option for this?

Hi TayoEXE,

H5P contents are designed to be taken/reviewed unlimited times. It could be a setting in Moodle but I'm not sure which. What do your students see whenever they try the same content again?

-BV52

Basically, if the questions are not all answered correctly, it shows the score out of the number of questions, gives a couple buttons such as "retry." But if they are all answered all correctly, it shows the result, but none of those buttons appear again to retry or review.

Hi TayoEXE,

  1. Would you mind providing a test content here?
  2. Does this happen to all your contents?
  3. What is your activity completion settings in Moodle?

you mention you are familiar with Wordpress, me too.
During the H5p installation process, I came across a few WordPress modules, and discover that there is an addon called learndash, another one called, WPLMS, One thing I really like WPLMS is that it allows you to publish a ios app. Here is the review for WPLMS,
https://www.capterra.com/p/170817/WPLMS/

I am still researching both products, not sure which one is better, right now I am more lean toward WPLMS for the ios App publishing features.

Oh, WPLMS seems to be able to develop for both native Android and ios. So, if I understand correctly, it uses WordPress, but WPLMS is an addon that is also an LMS? Does it use H5P at all? What's the pricing, etc.? I was looking into Moodle sincie it's a standalone LMS that is free and open-source that can integrate plugins such as H5P. I'd love to see if you find anything else on it. I'm also experimenting with everything as well to find what would be best for my company.
