H5P-results from Essay not saved within Moodle

Hi,

Recently, the activity Essay was launched within H5P. Great! I also found a beta version of Dictation. Even greater!

But: the results that I score within both activities are not passed on to the Moodle grade list. That's less great.

Am I doing something wrong? Do I have to wait for an update of the H5P plug-in? Who knows the right answer?

Greeting, Kees Koopman.

Hi kkoopman,

Thank you for reporting this. The Essay content type was contributed by a member of the community and you can reach out to Otacke here.

Hi Kees!

I have not yet given attention to moodle specific requirements. I'll look into that.

Best,

Oliver

Hi Oliver,

We are using the Essay tool for students to enter essay type answers.

The student answers aren't displaying in the Reports.

Can you please help.

Regards

Gaelyn

Hi Gaelyn!

My answer at https://h5p.org/comment/34798#comment-34798 still holds.

Best,

Oliver

Thanks!
Kees

You're welcome!
I have two other small improvements for Essay, too, and they'll all be part of my next update for the content type.

otacke's picture

Hi Kees!

A short status update: I just installed a moodle system for testing, and I'll probably add the missing feature next week - have to show Hamburg to my visitors this weekend :-)

Best,

Oliver

Thanks a lot!
Nice time in Hamburg!
Sincerely, Kees

I just added the necessary functions to H5P Essay, and it seems that the scores are now reported correctly. Will test it more thoroughly tomorrow.

Hi Otacke,

Great activity! I am not able to see the scores on moodle still. Am I doing something wrong?

otacke's picture

Hi mhl397!

I should create a shortcut for answering this question ... :-)

The code of the necessary update has already been reviewed, but it comes with two modifications to the reporting module that are necessary:

  1. Essay is a "long fill-in" question type, and this is currently not supported. The pull request that will add support for those questions is still idling at https://github.com/h5p/h5p-php-report/pull/3.
  2. Essay essentially does not really have wrong/correct answers, and the reporting module will not display the results correctly in that case. The pull request that's required to add these changes are waiting for review at https://github.com/h5p/h5p-php-report/pull/4.

So, what you may be doing wrong is not nagging the H5P core team enough (kidding!) or not raising funds for them so they can afford the time required to review the changes and to release them shortly.

Cheers,
Oliver

Hi,

I have just set up an essay question in Moodle 3.4 (Boost, Firefox, Essay module up-to-date) but grades are not reported to the gradebook as mentioned above. I have also set Activity completion to 'achieve a grade', so the students are not seeing the activity as completed because there is no grade.

The activity is set with 'retry'. Perhaps there is a 'submit' feature that should be activated ??

Thanks for the activity - original and useful.

Hi enib!

The changes to the code simply have not yet been reviewed. You can follow progress at https://h5ptechnology.atlassian.net/browse/HFP-1879.

Best,
Oliver

Ok, thanks for the update. The concept of Essay is a useful one - thanks.

otacke's picture

You're welcome!

Hello,
Does the essay question now export grades to Moodle?
The Moodle I use (in school) is externally provided and perhaps they have not updated their system with your update on github?
Should my essay questions be savign grades? At the momment they still don't.
Any advice welcome (great module by the way!)

BV52's picture

Hi Rael,

Afaik this has not been implemented yet.

-BV52

Hello,

Cautious question: are results already included in the grade book? I almost dare not ask, but ... who knows!

Sincerely, Kees Koopman.

BV52's picture

Hi Kees,

I'm afraid not yet but afaik the plan in the coming weeks is to review all proposed changes and additions to the exisiting contents that are contributed by the community. This includes the proposed additions and changes of Oliver.

-BV52

Greetings,

I too am running into this issue on our Moodle 3.6 (boost) install. I had hoped it would be addressed by now.

Hi Allen!

The review for Essay is done, but there's some reporting stuff review left to do. You can find details at https://h5ptechnology.atlassian.net/browse/HFP-1879.

@BV: Not sure if a separate ticket for the reporting pull requests makes sense (https://github.com/h5p/h5p-php-report/pull/3 and https://github.com/h5p/h5p-php-report/pull/4 [and possibly https://github.com/h5p/h5p-php-report/pull/5 although not required for Essay]).

Best,
Oliver

BV52's picture

Hi Oliver,

I would have to ask the core team if it is needed or if they have these PRs on their schedule already.

Edit: Filed review request here.

-BV52

Thx, Oliver. I'll be glad to have that up and running.

Hello,

I have read the different threads about the essay and other H5P activities not being reflected on the Moodle Grades. I know this is on the agenda, and I'd like to know if this would be a feature for the next release (H5P or Moodle?) and whether it'll be announced. Just to know when we can expect it and organize accordingly - we would really make great use of the essay question type.

And I have an additional question (sorry if I mixed the threads): will then be also possible to see the answer? In our learning setting, the grade is not as important as viewing the answer the student entered.

Thanks for the amazing job!

Beatriz

BV52's picture

Hi Beatriz,

Normally the core team sends out a newsletter for major updates. You can also check the Release Overview page which gets updated within a week after a new release. The feature is on its way since the code is there it's just a matter of getting everything reviewed and tested.

I would assume it will show the answer since most content types follow similar if not exactly the same format.

-BV

Hi BV,

I see on the page provided https://h5ptechnology.atlassian.net/browse/HFP-1879 it shows the status is "done," but I do not see it listed as a release date. Any idea when this would be released? Or is "done" not the final step in the process?

otacke's picture

Hi laraedwards!

You will find the answer to your question at the bottom of the comments of the Jira issue.

Best,

Oliver

Hi BV,

I'm new to H5P. I'm using it in my Moodle courses. I was just wondering first, if can see and check my student's essays, or maybe evalute them manually as well? So can I alter the score of an essay after having checked the student's work?

Thanks,

Sylviab

BV52's picture

Hi Sylviab,

Afaik this is not possible, the scoring is based on the 'keywords".

-BV

otacke's picture

Hi Sylviab! Hi BV!

If you are running the latest version of Essay, you should be able to see the students' answers in moodle's gradebook - and I assume that you could also override the score manually? Not sure, I am no moodle expert.

Best,
Oliver

Hi Oliver,

I get a score in the scorebook. Great.

The student's answer is NOT in the gradebook. Sorry.

otacke's picture

Hi koopman!

When I click on "grades" and the choose an Essay interaction, I see something like in the first screenshot.

If I then click on "Report", I can see the text that was entered. See second screenshot.

Best,
Oliver

Hi Oliver,

Hi kkoopman!

So, what version of Essay are you using? Have you updated it and existing content to the latest version?

If yes: Any other info you could give the community to help (cmp. https://h5p.org/forum/9)?

Best,

Oliver

Hi Oliver,

I use version 1.2.3 of the library Essay. Is that the newest version?

Kees.

otacke's picture

Hi Kees.

Yes, it is. Are you testing with new content or with existing content that has not yet been updated?

Best,
Oliver

Hi Oliver,

I am testing with the newest version and with fresh and new content.

Sincerely, Kees

otacke's picture

Hi Kees!

Then the next step would be to check the PHP error log and the development console for errors.

Best,

Oliver

Hi everyone,

I am experiencing the same issue as well, when I click on the 'report' option I just see the question and score, not what the user has written in response.

Using Essay v 1.2.3 in the library as well.

No messages with debugging turned on either.

Colin

Hi Oliver,

Thanks for your answer. I was just wondering where I can get the latest version from? I'm not sure which version we have at our school.

Sylvia

otacke's picture

Hi Sylvia!

If you don't have the appropriate rights, you can't. Then your admin will have to update H5P.Essay (and existing content). If you can, you should check the documentation.

Best,
Oliver

Hi BV,

Thanks for your answer. Then can see their answers somehow, not just the scores?

Sylvia

Beatriz Rojo's picture

Thanks a lot for letting me know, BV :)

Hi all,

Any updates on recording H5P essay into Moodle grades? I tested today and got 4/6 correct on a question but Moodle grade is showing 0%.

Hi everyone, I have the same issue as Kees, using Essay version 1.2.3 I can click on 'Report' in the gradebook but only see the Essay question and grade, I do not get to see the text entered by the student.

Colin

otacke's picture

Hi Colin!

That version of Essay is reporting the results, but the moodle plugin requires the latest version of the reporting library that's not yet included in the moodle plugin.

Best,
Oliver

Best,
Oliver

Hi Oliver,

Thanks for the reply, can it be added manually? If not do you know when it is likely to be added to the Moodle version.

Cheers,

Colin

otacke's picture

Hi Colin!

I don't know when the H5P core team will update the plugin no. They'd gave to answer that question. But yes, the files from the repository on github could simply be copied to mod/hvp/reporting thus replacing the current version. I did that for testing Essay. Of course, you should test it on a staging site first, make backups before, etc. Just in case ...

Best,

Oliver

Hi Oliver,

Thanks for the info, can you direct me to the correct files to download from GitHub please.

Thanks,

Colin

Hi Oliver,

Can you direct me to what and where I need to download from on GitHub, I'm not sure if I download from the Moodle section and where speciifically.

Thanks,

Colin
