Cornell notes

I am interested to use Cornell notes h5p task in Moodle.

When I create a h5p interactive task, and I choose Cornell notes, later when I try to use it, I can write notes but the work can't be saved it. There is no button for saving it, and if I reload the task, I lose all written.

How can I fix this problem? I want to see my students write in these tasks.

Thanks you

Hi IvanFyQ,

if you used the H5p-plugin developed by moodle, please contact your moodle forum. Otherwise a forum search might be helpful. https://h5p.org/node/1253920

Hi!

Short answer: moodle's custom H5P integration does not support saving the state. Only the H5P plugin for moodle does.

Long answer: Please read details in the post that Villon linked to.

Best,

Oliver

Thanks you Villon and Oliver.

I have activated and changed in h5p module the save state option and the time for 3 seconds and notes are saved.

I have seen I can add a Save button. How can I do it? Is there instructions?

Now I see another problem. Can students submit this activity? There is no submit button. However, there is qualification module, I can evaluate it but in gradebook neither I can do it.

From h5p.org, is it possible?

Thanks you

Hi IvanFyQ,

Cornell Notes does not have a submit option. It provides a structured way of taking notes and was never intended to be graded or evaluated.

Ok BV52.

so, is there  no way to keep track if a student takes notes? Can't I supervise it?

I would like to know if they work these kind of tasks.

Thanks you

Hi IvanFyQ,

I'm afraid not within the content. Activity completion in Moodle might help at least the option "Require view".

No. Cornell Notes does not allow teachers to view the notes that students take, and the purpose of Cornell notes in general is not to supervise what students are doing.

What about students being able to export/save and print off their notes for study purposes? How would this happen with Canvas integration? Please note I am a user and not a programmer.

Hi Simone!

The Cornell Notes content type features a "Copy" button which exports the text of all three sections to the clipboard, so it can be pasted to text processors, notepads, etc. That button was introduced in March 2022, but the H5P core team has not updated their version of Cornell Notes on the H5P Hub for a while and not much is happening with the respective ticket on their public issue tracker.

I assume that you're using H5P.com (for Canvas integration), so you're bound to what the H5P core team offers. Otherwise, if you're using some other self-hosted platform to embed H5P content from, you can simply download the demo content from https://www.olivertacke.de/labs/2019/05/04/i-was-missing-a-c/ and upload it to your platform in an admin role.

Best,

Oliver

This is really helpful Oliver - I'll have a play around with this function and see how I go. I love this content type and really want to make the process as smooth as possible for students.

Cheers,

Simone

Hi Oliver,

Under 'reuse' I selected 'Copy content'. If I try the first option and try to open in notepad, it doesn't work. If I try the second option, pasting into notepad jsut gives me the text 'h5p content'.

I am very new to all this so I'm not sure where I'm going wrong!

Cheers,

Simone

Hi Simone,

The reuse button is not meant to be used this way. This a general H5P content feature (available for all content types). Download lets you download a copy of your content so that you can upload it into another server or maybe give it to a colleague so that they can use it. On the other hand copy lets you copy/paste the content if you are either creating a new one based on that content or combining several contents. You can read more about this feature here

We have not implemented the feature that Oliver has mentioned and I do not have any timeline if and when this will happen. If you are self-hosting your content in Wordpress, Moodle or Drupa, you can download the demo content in Oliver's website and upload into your system, please note that you need to be an admin of the site to be able to install new features. On the other hand if you are using H5P.com you will not be able to use this feature yet, not until our developers have reviewed, tested and released Oliver's updated version.

As BV already pointed out, that's not the "Copy" button that I was referring to. You can see the one that I mean at the bottom of the demo content at https://www.olivertacke.de/labs/2019/05/04/i-was-missing-a-c/ that I mentioned before.
