Hello,

I was recently informed of the H5P-Panopto integration. I tested it and it works well! :)

My followup question is, when will this intergration work with the H5P Moodle plugin? Is it going to be in the next version of mod_hvp? If yes, when does it come out?

Panopto should also work with the plugins including the one for Moodle.

Hi BV,

Panopto does works great with the Moodle plugin, but it seems there's a problem with subtitles.

First, subtitles uploaded to the H5P player do not appear over panopto videos - it seems the subtitles button itself isn't there.

As an alternative solution we tried to uplad the subtitles directly to the video in the panopto cloud. Now the subtitles button does appear, but we get some strange bugs:

  1. Although the subtitles are turned on by default, they do not appear over the video until you turn them off and then on again (critical).
  2. The subtitles location over the video is too close to the center of the screen and they collide with the video content (see "small screen" attachment). The subtitles should be at the bottom of the screen as highlighted (major).
  3. When going to full screen the subtitles do not change size or place - they stay the same as they were in a smaller screen (see "full screen" attachment). The subtitles should be larger in full screen, and of course located at the very bottom (major).

I will state that we prefer to upload subtitles directly to H5P and not to the panopto cloud. However, If the problem can be solved better / faster by addressing the aformentioned bugs, it could work too.

Please advise. Are these issues known? Are there any plans to address them, and if so, when?

Hi Uriya,

Subtitles cannot be added directly into the content if the video is hosted somewhere else in this case Panopto. I need to get back to you this since the integration with Panopto is still in the Alpha phase, I will consult with the core team and I may have answer before the weekend.

Hi Uriya,

A bit of correction from my previous reply (I reread it and it is a bit confusing). When videos are hosted in Panopto the subtitles needs to be uploaded in Panopto uploading it in the Interactive Video will not work. In regards to the issues that you reported the core team is looking into this and has also informed Panopto regarding the issue.

Thanks for coming back with the info.

We already know that uploading the subs to the Interactive Video will not work - the question is: why? Is it something H5P decided to do, or was it Panopto? Can you / them make it work in theory? Who should we talk to?

We prefer it over uploading to Panopto, as H5P is already the place for all of our information layers that go over the videos (links, text, interactions, subtitles).

About the issues, #1 was solved this week and #2 & #3 are also being looked at.

Hi Uriya,

If I'm not mistaken it was more along the lines of since they already provide such feature there is no need to create a separate feature within the content. A separate code is needed for subtitles to work with videos that are hosted somewhere else.

Hi BV,

Uploading the subtitles along with the video to Panopto does make sense when you are creating new content, but our situation is different. I'll explain. Our organization recently migrated ~4000 videos to Panopto from another 3rd party host that we've been working with for years. That host only stored the videos themselves, so historically, the subtitles feature of H5P was our solution. Now that we've migrated, we found that all of those subtitles don't work anymore, and we're looking for a way to fix that without having to migrate all the subtitles too. As I mentioned, we prefer to upload subtitles directly to H5P, as it is already the place for all of our information layers that go over the videos (links, text, interactions etc).

Would you be able to check about that separate code to support subtitles for videos hosted at Panopto? What does it take to make that happen?

Thank you for the additional information. I will inform the core team regarding this and if they ever decide to add this feature it will not come this year or early next year. The core is has a full schedule until the first quarter of next year.

This is a major issue for several academic institutes in Israel, and we would love to see it fixed.

Looking at the video player for panaopto code:

It seems we have some caption support, and it seems like it just needs a little debugging to make it work.

Like Nadav mentioned, it seems there is some caption support in the code, and it only requires a few hours of debugging, according to one of our developers. He also sent us this link which shows a recent change made to the code. Does this change fix the issue? If yes, when (if at all) it is planned for release?

Sorry for nudging but this manner is of stategic importance to us, and a major issue for several academic institutes in Israel, like Nadav said.

Is there anyone at H5P that you can verify with regarding this code fix? We just want to get an answer whether it solves the issue of H5P captions not showing up on Panopto videos, and if so, an estimate for when is it scheduled for release.

I'd love to know when these become available. As Uriya noted above, the H5P players can show existing Panopto captions, but currently it's a poor user experience.

You can check this page for information on the most recent updates to H5P. Please note that upon release it takes about 1-2 weeks before H5P.com gets updated, this is to help make sure that there no major issues that came about from the update.

My organization is dependent on the Pannopto <> H5P captions fix that Uriya asked about, and It's becoming critical issue for us (we've decided to hold Panoppto's implementation until this issue will be fixed).

Is there any way to check with the core team, when will it be possible to check & release this fix? 

* After reading the correspondance, I understend that it's still not prioritiesed, but I wonder (and asking) if it's possible to get estimation regarding this fix release date?

Hi Idan,

Not sure when but what I'm sure is it won't be this month or the next, 2nd quarter might be a reach so the earliest I would say is 3rd quarter of this year. The project that is on the highest priority right now is the OER Hub which is about to be released to a set of users as a final testing phase then if all goes well (fingers crossed) it will be release for everyone. The plan after this is to start reviewing, testing and releasing PR/commits and I'll make sure to follow up on this specific case.

Hi,

it is mid-2023, and there is no solution till today for uploading the subtitle to h5p issue. 
if you downloaded h5p with a working subtitle it will work fine, but when you want to create a new one it will not show anything.
