Why H5P.org is only meant for "test-driving" H5P

H5P.org is the community site for H5P. Its purpose is to provide those new to H5P with examples and information about what H5P is and how to get started. For those using H5P it provides a forum for communicating with the rest of the community, documentation and news.

There is also a feature called "test-drive" on H5P.org. This feature is meant to allow users to try out H5P either before installing it on their own servers or before installing updates on their own servers. It is not meant to be used to create and host real content.

(H5P.com is a service for creating and hosting real H5P content and integrating H5P with other publishing platforms.)

Why you shouldn't create real content on the H5P.org test drive

Real H5P content should be created on H5P.com or on a self hosted H5P open source version. See how to get started.

We strongly discourage the use of H5P.org as a service for creating and hosting any substantial content for the following reasons:

When we release updates, we have to take down H5P.org and we do so without warning. This happens just about every other week.
When we send out newsletters we disable the embeds to handle the extra traffic from the newsletters. We do so without warning.
There are often unstable versions of H5P installed, it is a test-drive feature. There are examples of those using H5P.org as a "free hosting service" loosing hours of work.
H5P.org is hosted on a low-cost hosting provider and is often slow to respond. In very busy periods it might not respond at all.
We do not provide data processing agreements for H5P.org. With the GDPR interpreted strictly, it is illegal to use it if Europeans are among the target audience.
It is not meant to be used to host content. Again, it was designed primarily for testing purposes. We will soon start limiting the ability to embed content from H5P.org.

Why is H5P.com well suited for this and H5P.org not?

H5P.com is designed to handle insane amounts of traffic with a minimum of ten servers in each region, more servers being added automatically when needed and a network of distribution servers on top of that. H5P.org is designed to mainly handle our forum. It is just a Drupal site running on a single server which is plenty if it wasn’t for the extra traffic generated by the test drive feature.

Is H5P.com the only option? Isn't H5P free?

H5P itself is open source and we have developed free open source plugins for various publishing systems allowing users to host the free code themselves. Those hosting H5P themselves will most likely be paying someone else for the hosting. If you already have a Drupal, WordPress or Moodle site you may try out the corresponding free plugins. If you would like to both host H5P yourself and support the development of H5P you may sign up for the H5P Supporter Network.

If you don't have access to Drupal, WordPress or Moodle already we encourage you to consider signing up for H5P.com and through that help support the development of H5P, getting access to the best version of H5P and priority support in return.

Contents are kept for a maximum of 30 days after the subscription is cancelled if no other agreements has been made. I would advice that if you are going to use the service on a project basis to download the contents before cancelling the subscription and reuploading them if and when it is needed.

Free?

Can we get H5P for free with H5P.org + embed the content in other platforms (LMS) for commmercial use , right?

I am creating some content here and planning to use it in an Online Language Course (financial purposes of the company).

My company's LMS doesn't have any integration or plug-in that connects with H5P content. It is a very simple (and sometimes bad) one.

And if the embed option is disabled, what should I do? Would I have to go to H5P. com and pay the subscription? Because the company doesn't have any plans to choose another LMS, like Moodle or Canvas.

We do not recommend using H5P.org to host 'real' content. The site has very limited resouces and is meant for testing purposes. This is the reason why not all content types are available. Check the getting started page for information on how you can use all the content types and use H5P for real. We unfortunately are not able to provide free hosting, only free software :)

Dúvida

A integração pela "embedded option" ainda está ativa e pode ser usadas em outros sistemas de aprendizagem diferentes dos que possuem integração com plugins certo?

A LMS da minha empresa é uma simples e não possui os plugins. Caso a opção de "embed" sair do ar o que devo fazer?

PS: O uso comercial dos recursos produzidos no H5P. org é permitido, certo? Recursos produzidos aqui cpara treinamentos e cursos educacionais com fins financeiros podem ser "embedados/incorporados" a outros locais, certo?

Availability of embedded content after disabling "embed option"

Dear all,

Thanks a lot for all the info. I still have a doubt. I am a teacher at a German university. They plan to include H5P plugin in Moodle but it will take a while. When you disable the embed option in H5P.org, all the content created and embedded before will not be available anymore? I read the content will be available in our account, but will it be possible to see it where we embedded it?

If and when embedding is limited the current plan is to disable it for newly created contents. In terms of contents that you created before they will not be removed from H5P.org's server. No there is no way of checking where these contents have been embedded.

Please be reminded that H5P.org is not supposed to be used to host "real" contents.

Hosting content after 30-days-trial

I have a questin concering the use of my content after the 30-day trial of h5pcom. If I already embedded my content in Moodle is it still gonna be visible after my trial ended? Or is it gonna be deleted afterwards? And can I still reactivate my account after some time editing the content?

Once the trial ends the contents cannot be accessed anymore. However it is our policy to keep the contents for 30 days after the trial expires and will be deleted if no new agreement is reached. With regards to reactivation you need to send an e-mail to H5P.com's Customer Success team at [email protected] to request if this is possible.

Embedding H5P content in Articulate Rise

Hi!

We currently use H5P to create interactive activities on our Moodle LMS. However, we have started using Articulate (Rise in this case) to create more attractive content more easily. Rise doesn;'t have all the interactive activities that we have in H5P, in particular the interactive video. But since we already use the H5P plugin on Moodle, I wonder if we have to purchase an additional H5P subscription to generate embed codes for an interactive video we want to use in Rise? Is there a way we can get an embed code from our Moodle plugin that can be used in Rise?
