So you like what you see so far? Want more? We have more in store for you.

You might be wondering why not all contents are available...

This is to provide a best possible experience for new users and to ensure that people use H5P.org only for trying out H5P.

Check the getting started page for information on how you can use all the content types and use H5P for real.

I'd like to request access!

Hi Aisha,

To provide a best possible experience for new users and to ensure that people use H5P.org only for trying out H5P (we've had more traffic than our server can handle lately, ref also the warnings when you create content, embed content and view the content) there are limited content types that are available.

Check the getting started page for information on how you can use all the content types and use H5P for real. We unfortunately are not able to provide free hosting, only free software :) Hopefully you'll consider supporting the H5P Core Team by using H5P.com.

Dear BV52,

I would like to request access to all content types please.  I was in the midst of developing a PD workshop for staff here, and found I could take the development any further.

All I have to do is create this single interaction as an example for our teachers here.

Thank you for helping

I teach ESOL in Brighton and I have been using Hot Potatoes on my website for many years. I have also used javascript for some simple quizzes but it's quite time consuming. I think H5P is wonderful and am really grateful to its community.

Congratulations

I have H5P in Moodle now. Where/How do I make/export from Moodle to  a stand alone unit that I can place in SEQTA, which is a CMS?

Cheers

Hi, for this purpose you can embed the content there.
This can be achieved by going to your H5P content's view, in the lower left side of the content there should be a frame with an "embed" button. Click this and copy the embed code that you find within its' dialog. Then you can embed this within any other page, assuming you're alloing scripts to run from this origin, see Access-Control-Allow-Origin header.

Hi there,

Hi kangland,

The content types offered up for testing on H5P.org are supposed to give new users examples of what H5P can do. Drag and drop for instance is a content type that is more difficult to use, and for this reason, it is not enabled by default.

I recommend that you check out the tutorials for these content types.

Hi compst,

Visiting the page in my previous comments will give you access to all content types.

-BV52

Hi,

I thought I had access but am getting the error message 'Failed to load data' when I access the 'All H5P Content' page.

So it may seem I haven't access after all. Could I have it, please?

Hi at123,

Please see my answer on your original post.

Please note that the access to all content types stated in this page is for H5P.org and since you are using Wordpress you should be able to access all of them there. If you need access to all contents types in H5P.org just head over to this page.

Can i make quizzes and other memeory games and display on my website . Can i sell the quizzes online.

What type of license to fill in meta data when i start making a quiz. Please guide .

BV52's picture

Hi Ravi,

H5P is a completely free and open technology, licensed with the MIT license. You are free to use however you like. You place anything in the metadata that will suit your needs.

The one "free quiz" I created for a class was disabled within a month for not paying...There is nothing free or open about this place.

BV52's picture

Hi GJThurell,

I think you might have mistaken this with H5P.com which is a paid service or there could be other factors such as your content may have been caught in the spam filter or you noticed the issue when the embed feature was taken down temporarily. H5P.org is a free service to allow users to test H5P contents before they either sign up for H5P.com or host their own content using Drupal, Wordpress or Moodle.

My  university purchased a license for h5p and I would like to know how I can get access to all content. I created a free account and I have access to the content. Would someone in a campus administrative role have the ability to grant access to all content?

BV52's picture

Hi Lisa,

For authors in H5P.com the administrator can set which contents they can create. For non-authors only contents shared to them can be accessed this can be set by the administrator or the author of the content.

I am extremely disappointed to see the Drag & Drop feature be moved away during a time of crisis, when many educators and students could use such a service. I have used H5P repeatedly and my students find it extremely helpful. I have recommended it to many colleagues. It is disappointing to see such features take away at a whim.

Before limiting content types why not poll educators to see what content types they find the most useful? Dragand Drop and Fill in the Blanks are simple features that most can use.

Additionaly the price point for H5P.com is frankly out of a feasible reach of many teachers, at $57USD/month, when other pedagogical tools are cheaper than that at a yearly rate, let alone a monthly use.

To me this smacks of taking advantage of a crisis in health and education. I'm NOT impressed. I know I wouldn't be paying the fee. I also am pretty sure our board of education wouldn't be paying the fee. Ridiculous.

falcon's picture

It is unfortunately clear that you have been using H5P.org to provide content to your students despite the warnings. We have been adding more and more warnings against this, on top of the content creation page (always visible), when you get the embed code and lately also on top of the content itself. I'm very sorry you didn't see any of them. We'll consider adding more or making them stand out more.

H5P.org is only meant to try out H5P before installing it on your own site or using it for free. It is a normal Drupal site with no special scaling capabilities, so when usage increases the site goes down and authors like you loose their work. If we added the content types back it wouldn't help. The site would just keep going down like it did on Monday until the content types were disabled.

Those who do exploit the crises are those who have big wallets and offer their help for free the next few months. People will end up having their content on their services and that content will be held hostage if they don't start paying when the extra free months are over. Instead of this we offer you actual free software, but you have to host it yourself. It is what we have always done.

The header on the contect creation page reads as follows "H5P.org provides a free service for trying out H5P before installing it on your own site or signing up for H5P.com. Be aware that all test content created on H5P.org is publicly available." It does not say this cannot be used to provice content for students. Nor does it insinuate that. I strongly take objection to the idea that I have ignored warnings - that only warns that it is publicly available - which I am fine with. Unlike some people, I don't mind others using my work, because that is at the heart of education of children: It isn't a "for profit" exercise. It is about kids and helping them learn and grow.

I would also beg to differ on the "hostage" comment on other platforms. Many have had a free mode long before this - for YEARS. If you aren't sure I can point you towards a large number, and yes, they have found ways to host the content.

Any content there created BEFORE the COVID19 crisis, or when they offered subscriptions, wasn't locked behind a paywall. I understand your issues, but a subscription point of $57/mo USD is beyond reasonable for individual educators, or even when scaled up to a school board level. It is a ridculous price point. That price point is essentially what many other education content services offer for an entire YEAR - with unlimited hosting capability.

Why not offer smaller more manageable subscription prices for a smaller range of capabilities? Seems like that would be a MUCH better business model.

Hi Mr. Westbury!

Maybe "service for trying out H5P" isn't clear enough? How could it be phrased better?

And what about "installing it on your own site"? The software H5P is completely free ($ 0.00) and you can download and host it yourself on your own instance of WordPress, Drupal, moodle, ILIAS, Typo3 etc.

Best,
Oliver

Thank you for the feedback. I guess we have to make that message more clear. "trying out H5P" and "test content" was meant to mean just try it, not use it, but I agree that we could be much more clear on that one.

There is a more clear warning when you get the embed code,:

WARNING: H5P.org is only for trying out H5P. The embed option will be limited soon. Do not use H5P.org to host real contentLearn more (my highlighting)

It is stronger and clearer, and most people embed, but I assume you're sending your students to H5P.org and unfortunately haven't seen it.

Then there is the third:

"Thank you for trying out H5P. To get started with H5P read our getting started guide" on top of your created content, at least indicating that you're just trying out the tool and telling you how to get started, but I agree that one could be more clear as well.

Regarding H5P.com pricing, we do not want teachers to pay for H5P.com out of their own pockets. In the EU there is also VAT rules making it hard to offer licenses to private individuals for small companies based outside the EU. It is my understanding that we would need to establish a company inside the EU and follow lots of other formalitites. We want organizations to purchase licenses, that is why the 57 USD per month license cover three authors. It is also a fraction of the price our main competitor charges. I do not know what tools you get 57 USD for 3 authors per year prices from? Those we're usually compared with always costs more than H5P.com.

H5P.com currently is aimed at companies, universities, collages and school districts. Hundreds of universities uses H5P.com. 4 of the top 5 universities uses H5P.com. Large companies, some of the worlds largest school districts etc. We might create a plan for individuals later, but I hope we can make employers purchase the licenses and not the teachers. (The price also drops A LOT when large school-districts purchase H5P.com's educational enterprise license. It is less than 6 cents per student per month for large districts and allow all teachers in the district to use it.)

I can tell you school districts will not pay a price of this nature for H5P in Canada. It is simply not a worthwhile cost since most classrooms are not using brightspace as a delivery model. That is a very niche market for K-12 public education - that may be acceptable to higher ups who attend conferences, but not to "on the ground teachers" who actually - you know - do the teaching.

Even 57USD/mo is an extremely high price point for 3 content author (teachers). You're looking at over $230USD/yr for a teacher. A ridiculous amount of what most teachers are going to be able to use the platform for. Education budgets for K-12 learning in North America are shrinking, there isn't room for this extra cost. I can tell you that from personal experience. When a board has a choice between investing in needed repairs, assistive equipment for special need learners, IT upgrades, etc... your prince point isn't feasible. Comparing school districts with large universities with extremely high tuition isn't an accurate comparison. For example, for my board to purcase an author based lisence for us, that equates to over $100,000 USD. It will be hard for people to justify that as a tool when only a fraction of teachers will use it, and the cost of the license equates to 2 teacher salaries. If you're looking for education impact as an administrator, what offers more impact for children? Two classroom teachers? or A tool that less than half of staff will be able to use?

Let's be real about that.

Most blended learning in K-12 does not run through Brightspace, but rather web-based applications that are mandated by boards and/or Education ministries. Brightspace is a very powerful tool but requires a large amount of time management to learn. I know, I've used it, I've learned. Its not easily manageable for kids in the K-12 bracket, nor is it accessible for many teachers. I know, we've done trainings.

If you are really looking to expand a business model - allowing people to send students via a web address is most accessible. It is simple, user friendly and easy for all student to navigate - remember many of these students even at the Sr level are using educational technology for the first time. Many teachers simply do NOT have the time to build websites and space in hosting applications. Our time is extremely taken up by the demands of teaching children, marking work, preparing lessons, doing paperwork, etc. Most work from 8am into the evening hours. I've been doing this 20 years and I know many other higher education professionals, respectfully, do not have the workload or demands that K-12 teachers do.

I'm letting you know there is a definite need for your services for the K-12 market, because you have created a very user friendly, accessible tool that helps educators expland their pedagogy into technological environments to help students around the world without a great time investment cost. What you've done is VERY valuable to almost any teacher, regardless of their 'tech saavy' abilities. User friendly is the key. Simple and user friendly is the key.

That is how you can help teachers enable students to be successful for a brighter future. I would hope you are interested in offering an accessible price point for even a select number of content types. Why not let a teacher select say, 10 content types for a very reduced cost? I'd pay for that, but I can't justify paying hundreds of dollars (nor will my school board, which like everyone else has tightening purse strings) for it.

I'd really implore you to consider this, to help the maximum number of students and teachers around the world. Education has the power to change our future. I hope you want to be a part of that for as many of us as possible, and make it easy and affordable for individual teachers to use your service.

Thanks.

Hi Mr. Westbury!

As I mentioned in a different post: The software H5P is completely free. You can download and set it up on your own WordPress site, on moodle, Drupal, Typo3, ILIAS, Stud.IP etc.

The approach that schools and universities in Germany take if they want to use H5P is to set up and maintain such a system for all their staff to use. In Bavaria, there's even a platform run by the state available for all teachers in Bavaria.

Best,

Oliver

That's wonderful for Germany, but that's not how school are run in Canada, and its not going to change.

Platforms like WordPress, Moodle, Drupal, Typo3, ILIAS, Stud.IP etc. aren't accessible to mos educators who are VERY pressed with time and simply don't have the time to learn to build those platforms, and many districts won't allow them to be used preferring a single access point sie for all staff and students (Google Classroom, Edsby, Microsoft Office)

otacke's picture

Hi Mr. Westbury!

I understand your position, but I don't understand why you're writing lengthy rants against a company for not being compatible with the situation in Canada.

In Germany, there's also an NGO that's hosting an H5P based system that others can use for free (if they agree to use open licenses), https://apps.zum.de. So I still think there are plenty of ways beyond complaining.

Best,

Oliver

Thanks again for your feedback. I'm sorry about the late reply. We are working on pricing and alternatives for K-12. We're not a big team yet, but growing and will be able to do more things in parrallel as the team grows. Today we serve K-12 through large contracts where the price go much lower per author thanks to economies of scale. Several school districts in North America have provided staff with access and are about to provide their staff with H5P through H5P.com since last I commented here, but in time we will also be able to offer smaller packages at a lower cost for K-12 schools. I'm personally against teachers buying ed-tec out of their own pocket though. At least in Norway teachers in general are not paid as much as they deserve to be paid for the incredibly important job they are doing, and shouldn't have to buy the tools they need for their job themselves so we will primarily aim at the government providing their staff with the tools they need.
