It is my great pleasure to introduce some highly requested features in this July release update. I know many will be excited about some of the things we’re launching here, and the excitement for the next release will probably be even bigger!
Submit screen in Interactive Video
The new Interactive Video submit screen will give the learners an overview of what they’ve done and achieved in the video, and let the submit their scores and answers when they are ready. Try it out below:
Authors can make the submit screen pop up when they want it to pop up in the video, and learners may also open it whenever they want to check their progress.
Free Text Question in Interactive Video
Many questions don’t have an answer that is either right or wrong. The author may want the learners to reflect and write down their thoughts instead. This is now possible in Interactive Video:
Authors may review and score the learners’ answers manually. Do note that this content type is only available if you use Moodle or an LRS. LRSs typically won’t support grading. H5P.com users will get this content type and the manual grading feature in July through the upcoming H5P.com LRS.
Documentation tool stores the answers in more ways
Learners may now choose to store the documentation they create in one or more of:
- The Moodle Gradebook
- An LRS
- H5P.com (from August)
This will make it much easier for both the learners and the teachers to access the documentation later.
More compact feedback
To save space, especially within Course Presentation and Interactive Video, the feedback block has been made more compact.
Make the Course Presentation summary slide more accessible
Laszlo Romer (Deakin University) has accessibility tested a couple of the H5P content types, thanks Laszlo! The H5P Core Team decided to hotfix two of his observations since he revealed that the summary slide for Course Presentation was very hard to understand for read speaker users. We have now added proper table headings and made sure that the total score is marked properly as well so that readspeaker users won’t have a problem reviewing their achievements.
Massive language improvements
Improvements for the following languages were added with some of the contributors listed in parentheses:
- French (knowledgeplaces & fredericpierron)
- Dutch (René Breedveld & fredericraes)
- Polish (Piotr W)
- German (IsabelZydun & Foorbie)
- Spanish (Jay Torres)
- Bosnian (sabahuddin)
- Chinese (dnowba)
- Arabic (djoudi)
- Greek (cchantzis)
Bug fixes
Several bug fixes have also been released since the last update.

The way Youtube handles the videos makes it easier to use them in H5P acitivities. But it is also possible to use videos hosted elsewhere. All you need to do is get the source URL, usually it ends with mp4 or webm.

Trackability
Question: Are the results submitted in the "in video" questions trackable/scorable in a Moodle environment, and can completion dependencies access or use these results? i.e. Can you score how a user did, have the moodle system track whether they completed "in video" question/answer submissions, and make other activities accessibility dependent on the successful completion of the interactive video in question?

Short answer, yes.
NOTE: This only applies if you are using the H5P Moodle Plugin.
I'm not sure if/how the latest changes (as of this week) will affect this, but if a student answers the in-video questions they will get a grade. You can set Activity Completion in Moodle to mark as complete if the activity receives a grade. With Activity Completon working you can set any other Access Restrictions you wish.
We're using this to help Gamify a course where students gain XP and level up with every video they watch (added impetus to watch the video instead of just Googling the bare bones). The Level Up! Moodle Plugin reads the Activity Completion of each of the videos (some have several pointed questions, others just have a random one to make sure they watched the whole thing), and gives them the points.
One limitation is that, if they pass or fail the activity is still marked as complete - so you can't build your completino and conditionality based on passing or failing.

Hi,
The main difference is that the user doesn't need to finish the video for the scores to be recorded although I'm not sure if this will also trigger the activity completion.
In terms of pass/fail completion marking there are no changes to this.

Fantastic!! How can we use the new version in Wordpress?
I'm trying to get started with the great new interactive video features for free-text questions and submit screens. The features are working great for content I'm testing this morning on the h5p.org website. However, they're not available to me when I create a new H5P interactive video interaction in Wordpress.
This is the case even though the h5p library screen in Wordpress admin ("All H5P Content ... Libraries") shows version 1.19.3 being used for the newly created interaction. I've updated my H5P libraries on the interactions edit screen via the hub, by installing a new interaction type. (My previous interactive videos all show v. 1.17.5 being used.) FWIW, I'm on Wordpress 4.9.6 and am using the latest H5P plugin, v. 1.10.3 (released 2 weeks ago).
Is there a different kind of updating I can try, to make available the new editing buttons for Questionnaire and Open-ended Questions, and the end-of-video summary of responses?
thanks!

Hi Jim,
Check that, sorry I should have remembered this because questionnaire is also not showing. The Free text content is LRS dependent and since Wordpress does not have a built in LRS it is not enabled by default. Although there is a way to enable this by going to Settings -> H5P -> Enable LRS dependent content type. Please note that you will not be able to review the answers unless you have another plugin that can retrieve xAPI statements. You can read more about this here.

Thanks BV52! You're correct: "Settings -> H5P -> Enable LRS dependent content type" does enable both the "Questionnaire" and "Open ended question" buttons to appear in the new version of the Interactive Video h5p interaction. The link you reference about plugins that can retrieve xAPI interactions, https://h5p.org/documentation/for-authors/analyzing-results-and-answers, is also very useful.
Am I correct in thinking that Oliver Tacke's WordPress plugin "H5PxAPIkatchu" should also work for capturing users' data from open-ended questions and questionnaires directly, so that can be reviewed within WordPress and exported to CSV for display in Excel, etc? If so, that strikes me as a great alternative either on its own, or to setting up a separate LRS account such as Learning Locker, Grassblade, etc. Oliver has documented H5PxAPIkatchu at https://www.olivertacke.de/labs/2017/12/27/gotta-catch-em-all/ and in a short video walkthrough at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAcJtKS0NiA . Should H5PxAPIkatchu maybe also be added to the information at https://h5p.org/documentation/for-authors/analyzing-results-and-answers ?

Just playing a little more. I see now that Oliver T's H5PxAPIkatchu does capture and display xAPI for the new open-ended questions. Great!! Might it be a good idea to update the entry about Interactive Video's xAPI capabilities here: https://h5p.org/node/617/xapi-coverage?
Also a related question, possibly a bug. I've noticed in checking out H5PxAPIkatchu just now, that xAPI doesn't seem to be recording any information about user responses to true-false questions. Notably, T/F questions are also absent from the listing of xAPI capabilities for Intreactive Video on that xapi-coverage page. Is this fixable?
Thanks again!

Hi Jim!
H5PxAPIkatchu works fine with True-False-Questions -- there's no special treatment for any content type. I guess you tried it in the WordPress admin page? Interactions there are not recorded, because this would mess up your statistics when testing.

Thanks Oliver! Sorry for any
Thanks Oliver! Sorry for any lack of clarity with my last post. I'm sure that your excellent H5PxAPIkatchu plugin does accurately display all the xAPI statements that are output by Interactive Video. However, what I'm noticing today is that Interactive Video might not be outputting responses from T/F questions at all. This is from a new page I'd made for the new interaction embedded using the h5p shortcode, rather than from the H5P interaction's admin page -- although I did initially make that mistake -- good guess :-). All the other kinds of user content for Interactive Video question types that I'd tried from the new page, including the new open question type, did write to your H5PxAPIkatchu display.
I'm guessing the same thing would be the case if I were to use tunapanda's separate wp-h5p-xapi plugin to output to a simple installation of learning locker that I've got running on amazon webserver, but I haven't attempted that yet. I've also only tried this so far on an existing WordPress app I'm prototyping that's got a couple dozen plugins running, including a full-blown LMS plugin (Lifter), so some kind of incompatibility may be creeping in.
I'd be grateful if anyone could confirm/correct my understanding of whether the xAPI documentation for Interactive Video, which doesn't mention True/False, is complete in what question types do and don't generate xAPI statements, and whether True/False in particular might not be generating xAPI statements for some reason.
Best,
Jim

Hi Jim!Hmmm, a little mistery
Hi Jim!
Hmmm, a little mistery. BV tried to catch xAPI statements from True-False-Questions inside an interactive video, and it worked. I double checked, and I didn't encounter any problems either. So, it works fine with other interactions within Interactive Video? It would be very weird if one interaction failed but not the others -- but also a trace. Could you please check which library versions you're using (T/F and IV)? Shouldn't make a difference, because xAPI has been there forever, but who knows.
You're correct regarding the documentation of xAPI. It's far behind. True-False covers the verbs "attempted" (on start-up), "interacted" (on choosing one of the answers) and "answered" (on check) including all the usual results for a question. So, yes, also the documentation for IV is behind ... So much to do ... :-/

Uh oh - this turned out to be
Uh oh - this turned out to be just a wetware error on my part :-). I hadn't realized just how thorough xAPI data reporting is. The H5PxAPIkatchu plugin shows just 20 lines at a time, and the default is to show earliest first, so I was missing a lot of input when I simply eyeballed it or page-searched for "true" or "false" in the WordPress admin screen.
I realized my mistake once I downloaded the output to csv from your plugin and took a look in Excel. Always learning! When not exporting to csv, I'll know now to use the H5PxAPIkatchu column headers to default to the latest-first and/or go to the last results screen there.
Thanks to both you and BV for checking! FWIW, my Wordpress installation's libraries include Interactive Video versions 1.19.3 and 1.17.5, Interactive Video Editor versions 1.19.3 and 1.17.6, and TrueFalse Question versions 1.2.5 and 1.4.1. All seems to be working well.

BTW, Oliver, I've also really appreciated your contributions to some past threads in the H5P forums about potentials for using H5P for collaboration among site users, both with existing and potential future tools.
I'm thinking that the new open-ended question type in Interactive Video is one more really great way to invite user content that could potentially be shared among sets of learners to contribute to their own and other users' learning -- as opposed to just being used for individuals' scoring purposes as with so many learning management systems, instructional authoring systems, and learning record stores.
Along those lines, I've been meaning to ask you and other H5P'ers whether there might be some way to display formatted xAPI back to users directly, in a custom post type. (If nothing else, I'd be open to exporting out the xAPI statements as csv from H5PxAPIkatchu, then re-importing with another plugin like WPAllImport for display, but I'm guessing there's got to be a more direct way.) FWIW, the kind of LMS I'm prototyping is all about increasing the potential for learners to build their knowledge through collaboration, particularly through long-form videos that originated as workshop talks, and that I'm serving locally as mp4's.
It's through H5P forums that I've learned about some of the most interesting bits and pieces I'm shoe-horning into the prototype, whether directly as custom post types or via i-framing. Besides H5P itself, features I'm toying with include AblePlayer (https://ableplayer.github.io/ableplayer/) for displaying time-sequenced transcriptions; hypothes.is for enabling users to collaborate on highlighting annotating text-based materials including video transcripts; and VideoANT (ant.umn.edu) to enable time-linked collaborative annotation of videos themselves.
Best,
Jim

Hi Jim!
Me again. There's -- in my humble opinion -- quite some potential for opening education with H5P and xAPI that goes beyond scoring, even without the collaboration features that are planned. So, I am open for discussing options.
If you want to create a custom post type for WordPress, this should not be a huge challenge (just takes time), and I'd love to see it! All the data can be retrieved from the WordPress database, there's no need to export and re-import it.
Implementing transcriptions in H5P is something on my private to-do list ;-) It also should not be too complicated, because H5P already features captions.
Cheers,
Oliver

I like your thinking, Oliver!
I like your thinking, Oliver! Thanks for the link to your March 2018 blog post, above. I'd really like to see LMSs and other online learning tools become better tools for collaboration. xAPI does seem like a really good way to get there, particularly with sharing of open-ended responses for collaborative annotation, commentary, highlighting, etc.
It's intriguing, and sometimes frustrating, that users' data going into LMSs and LRS repository is still used so much for compliance -- 'did Smith finish that ethics training course?' -- and so little for building rich understandings individually and socially. It's a great area to explore, as is the related area of how enabling learners to set their own goals can help with motivation -- I hadn't encountered the term "Ulysses pacts" before reading your blog, and went right to Wikipedia for the back story ;-).
It does seem when working with rich, open data that there's always the temptation to boil it down to some numbers that we can average, correlate, chart, et cetera. For some folks, even the term "qualitative data" is limited to likert-style scores on attitudinal survey questions. Whereas for educators and experience/improvement researchers, those kinds of numbers might be better seen just as convenient indexes to point toward potential generalizations to consider when dealing more directly with open responses, rich visual records of observed behavior, learners' original creations, ongoing involvement in learning activity, and so on.
It's very cool that H5P brings together both kinds of data. I'd be very interested to hear how educators are using the Essay interaction, for instance, where points and feedback are presented to students depending on whether certain words are present in or absent from their writing. I'm sure that neither students nor teachers consider this to be a complete substitute for actually reading and responding to original text, but do they see value in the immediacy of the response, and/or the ability to group essays from multiple students according to whether those words appeared, etc.?
H5P's such a great tool for opening up thinking! Thanks to you and all the devs and the whole community for keeping it growing.

Hi Jim!Sharing annotations
Hi Jim!
Sharing annotations and similar cooperative/collaborative interactions will be eventually possible in H5P, too, but right now some workarounds would be necessary. While xAPI might be a good way to do it, it's probably to cumbersome for most.
I totally agree on your thoughts about dumping data in systems just for compliance purposes. There are probably manifold reasons for it, one of them a lack of integration of reports/analysis features for convenient use. Another ony may be the large variety of research methods and the knowledge required to apply them correctly for both, quantitative and qualitative data.
Unfortunately, I don't know much about the actual use of H5P Essay. If people use it, they seem to be at least content with the "clumsy workaround" of awarding points based on keywords (I called it Pandora's box myself). It may just be a relative point of view. It's not really a good solution, but possibly one of the best that's openly available right now.
BTW: I learned about the term Ulysses contracts from Dan Ariely in "Predictably irrational". Definitely a recommendation of mine.
